The purpose of the project “Countering Hate And Extremism on Campus – Knowledge Innovation and Training in HE (CHECKIT HE) is to understand, identify, check, challenge and take action against hate and exclusions on HEI campuses. Hate incidents and crimes targeting students are increasing across Europe and continue to plague campuses. Some students are more likely to be targets of hate and abuse than others, such as BAME groups, women, LGBT people, those who follow a religion/faith and disabled people. Examples of hate on campus include: hate speech, physical abuse, gendered or sexual violence, bullying, overt violence and ostracisation/exclusion by others. CHECK IT HE aims to enhance innovation in HEI response to hate and extremism on campuses, by building capacity, knowledge, skills and confidence, bringing together innovative practice in the field, to enable HEI professionals, HE policy makers, Students Unions, and other stakeholders (such as NGOs, criminal justice practitioners, and the wider EU youth labour force), to better respond and counter diverse forms of hate and extremism.
